iOS 18.3.1: Critical Security Update You Shouldn’t Ignore

Urgent iOS 18.3.1 Update Fixes Critical Security Flaw Exploited in Attacks

An emergency update in the version of 18.3.1 has been released by Apple addressing a serious security bug being actively exploited by sophisticated attacks. So, if you own either an iPhone or an iPad, you need to get your updates not very late, as it is a question of securing your personal data and privacy.

What’s the Issue?

The flaw noted CVE-2025-24200 is one where an attacker who has physical access to an iPhone or iPad would exploit and disable the USB Restricted Mode on one of those devices, which have had emergency updates to 11.4.1 after May 2018. The point of this mode is to block unauthorized USB-Lightning transfers after the machine has remained locked for periods of time.

Apparently, this flaw has already been exploited in “extremely sophisticated attacks” against targeted individuals. However, Apple does not give enough detail about these attacks. But the fact that the vulnerability was being exploited for an active use in the wild makes this update even more pressing.

Devices Affected

This update is available on the following devices:

  • iPhone XS or any subsequent model
  • iPad Pro (13-inch, 12.9-inch 3rd Gen & above, 11-inch 1st Gen & above)
  • iPad Air (3rd Gen & above)
  • iPad (7th Gen & above)
  • iPad Mini (5th Gen & above)

Why Did This Update Become Critical?

Considering the nature of this exploit, anybody not updating his/her device immediately would be a target of either an adversary with physical access extracting information or a cybercriminal/hacker getting access to the vulnerable space. This is worrying because people in high-risk environments like journalists, activists, government officials, and executives cannot bear such threats.

How to Get the Update

To install iOS 18.3.1, please observe the following steps:

1. Open Settings in your iPhone or iPad.

2. General > Software Update

3. Download and Install > Follow the on-screen instructions to finish the update.

It is always better to stay cautious in regard to future security patches by enabling Automatic Updates, which are accessible via Settings > General > Software Update.

Final Thoughts

Apple’s rapid response with iOS 18.3.1 clearly demonstrates the feeling of ever-looming cybersecurity threats over the heads of users of iPhones and iPads. Getting the device updated is one of the best pro-security practices when dealing with emerging threats.

Don’t wait for the worst-threat; update your device now. Cybercriminals who operate on the other side of the wall evolve their threats all the time, and one could say a delay in updating the software would expose one’s data to fresh vulnerabilities.

Stay safe! Stay updated!
